SEO defined discovery for a generation
For most of the web's history, discovery meant search. A person typed a query, a search engine returned ranked links, and the person did the evaluating. The discipline that grew up around this was SEO, Search Engine Optimization: structuring a site so it ranked well. The vocabulary was settled because the behavior was stable. The customer made the recommendation, not the machine.
Large language models and AI assistants arrive
As large language models matured and AI assistants became widely used, the behavior began to change. People started asking an AI for a recommendation directly and accepting an answer rather than a page of links. The machine moved from sorting options to evaluating them. SEO still mattered, but it no longer described the whole of the new behavior.
Sibling terms appear: GEO, AEO, LLMO
When behavior outruns language, several names compete to fill the gap. Practitioners reached for terms describing the channel in front of them: GEO for generative engines, AEO for answer engines, LLMO for large language models. Each named a real slice of the work. None named the whole, because each was anchored to a particular kind of system rather than to the force behind all of them.
AIO emerges as the term for the discipline
The common thread under GEO, AEO, and LLMO is not the engine. It is AI itself: machines that understand, trust, and recommend. AIO, AI Optimization, names that force directly. It is broad enough to cover every channel and durable because it will not be tied to one product or one generation of technology. AIO inherits the role SEO held
There is a tidy symmetry here. SEO was Search Engine Optimization for the search era. AIO is AI Optimization for the recommendation era. The pattern is familiar, the heir is obvious, and the abbreviation reads cleanly. That is part of why AIO settles as the generational successor rather than as one more competing acronym. A term becomes canonical when it is defined once and used consistently.
